A long-standing view that I have revolves around the concept of “being the bridge.”  This means that in order to be fully integrated with our business teams, we need to proactively work cross-functionally. We need to understand the business or organization we are part of and the challenges our colleagues face.  We need to be proactive in building bridges and facilitating alignment with critical stakeholders.

When you join a company or take on a new role in a company, it is so important to continuously discover new aspects of the business every day. Yes, there is a new vocabulary, and new faces and unique aspects to learn.  I am still learning every day, and I encourage everyone to do the same:  to be curious, to challenge the status quo and to really try to understand the overall enterprise so that we can all build the right bridges. If we all take a proactive approach to doing this, we will be that much stronger and we will continue to grow personally and professionally.  Reach out to others, ask questions, listen, and take a walk in their shoes – you will be amazed at what you can learn and the bridges you will be able to build.
